Ladies of the Godshill Women's Institute

In early May 2023, and after a homemade soup lunch, Godshill WI held its AGM, when it elected a new committee and confirmed that President Anne Dobson was to remain at the helm for another year.

Each year, the WI launches a campaign selected by members from a list of current topics. The resolutions are debated by each WI, and a final vote is cast at the WI’s forthcoming National Annual Meeting to be held in Cardiff. The resolution supported by Godshill WI is as follows

Clean rivers for people and wildlife

Water quality in our rivers is shameful. Legally, designated bathing waters must be regularly monitored for pollution. The NFWI urges its members, the wider public, local authorities and Government to make, support and promote applications for official designated bathing sites on appropriate stretches of rivers in their area. This will be as instrumental to the clean up of rivers as it has been for water quality improvement at coastal beaches.

There was a lively debate amongst members regarding the wording of the resolution, and a unanimous agreement was arrived at to support the resolution as it stands.

After the business of the AGM reviewing the previous year’s activities, tea and cakes were served. As is custom, bunches of flowers were presented to members celebrating birthdays in May – six ladies were honoured!

We are a friendly group who meet on the first Wednesday afternoon of the month at Godshill Village Hall. We welcome new members, and anyone may come along to a meeting free of charge to meet us and have a WI experience! We have a varied programme of events including topics such as silk painting with Annie Blake; ‘A History of Make-up’ with Sarah Delves; ‘Flushed with Success! A History of the Toilet’ with Judy Theobold and Flower Arranging for Christmas with Janet Newman.
